Hose Bib

Make sure all hoses are disconnected during the winter months. If there is a shutoff to the water supply on the inside, turn it off and drain.

GFCI

Test all GFCI outlets monthly. There are two buttons, one to test and one to reset. Trip and reset monthly.

Mouse Proof

Seal all exterior penetrations (electric, plumbing, HVAC, and all other holes). Always fill holes with steel wool prior to using filler or caulk, mice will not chew through steel wool. Always use urethane caulk not silicone. Never use GREAT STUFF spray foam on exterior. Check for openings at base of garage doors.

HVAC Filters

Change filters at the beginning of every season -  4 times a year to get the longest life out of the units and have better air quality. Get units serviced at manufacturers recommended intervals, generally annually.

Attic Access

To make your attic access more energy efficient seal up the attic access panel with weatherstripping. Cut a piece of fiberglass or rigid foam board insulation the same size as the attic hatch and glue it to the back of the attic access panel.

If you have pull-down stairs or an attic door, these should be sealed in a similar manner using weatherstripping and insulating the back of the door. Treat the attic door like an exterior door.
